Melbourne cup fashion dos and donts

Yay! It’s finally Melbourne Cup day, and the biggest question on every gal’s lips is … What to wear. After all, the competition is fierce. And why shouldn’t be? There’s a lot at stake including a whopping monetary prize, a gaggle of hot bachelors to compete for and of course, those Facebook pics that you need to make sure look darn perfect or you’ll never live it down.

While I’ve always been on the side of “comfort is key”, we all know that the best looks are when your dress is so tight, it’s literally sucking in your stomach, your heels are giving you bunions and your fascinator is giving you a darn headache.

But incase you’re wondering whether or not you’ve got the look down pat, here are some of my Race Day Rules and Regulations … listen at your peril.

1. Mini skirts are in. But remember that you’re going to be bending down a lot (most likely to pick up your bag once you’ve dropped it after too many champagnes). So the key here is to wear a full pair of underwear. That means briefs, boy-legged or panties. No g-strings or going sans underwear allowed! Even if this means you’re going to get the dreaded VPL, I’d prefer that then to see you flash your crotch.

2. Hair is of utmost importance. Even if you’re going to hide it behind a hat, fascinator or flower. Clean, shiny and loads of hairspray will ensure that it will stay neat and in place all day (and night) long. Oh, and as for what headwear to wear, don’t be afraid to go crazy. The rest of your outfit should be quite plain if you’re going to make a statement on your head.

3. Go easy on the cleavage. While we all love to show a bit of skin, Cup Day isn’t the place for it. Or at least not too much spilling out. Because while you might think you look appropriate at the beginning of the day, by the end you’ll most likely be spilling right out, and that’s not a good look!

4. Gloves are in – matchy-matchy is out. Go wild with accessories and then stick with black, or go wild with colours and then stick to minimal accessories.

5. Skip the sugary drinks. It’s tempting on Cup Day to take whatever drink comes your way, but seriously, unless you want to be throwing up by 5pm, stick to one type of drink (I like to stick to 2-3 glasses of champagne) and go easy on the cocktails. They usually put more than the recommended number of shots in them and they’re not too good for the hips either.

Oh, and don’t forget to eat a solid meal beforehand …
